I grew up climbing the rugged indoor mountains of Rockford, Illinois with my buddy, Curt. Every week in our teens, we’d climb together, hoping one day we’d replace the fake rocks with real ones. As years went by we went our separate ways; my path took me to Colorado, his to South Dakota. Over the past few years he has visited me in Aspen a few days a year to dust off his snowboard and get his powder fix, always telling me that one day he’d move out here.

One day, while I was at Highlands waiting for a friend to dig himself out of a tree well, I got a call from Curt. He had recently become engaged and had made plans to tie the knot at the top of Ajax in the first week of February. They wanted a small, low-key, justice-of-the-peace ceremony, and asked if I would be around for it. I told him that not only would I be around, but that I thought it was a great idea and I volunteered to have Obermeyer provide their wedding clothes. He was stoked, and became even more so, when I showed him the 2010 gear Obermeyer would be outfitting them in; Curt in the Telluride Shell & Silverton Pant, Jenny in the Aston Shell Jacket & Athena Pant.

A few weeks went by until friends, family and the big day arrived.

Then, on a beautiful Tuesday morning at the top of Aspen Mountain, Curt Hepler married Jeni Engels.

Big Air Fridays are Back!

We’re heading into the 8th year of Big Air Fridays at Snowmass, where local competitors and visiting daredevils showcase their skills off the 40 ft jump. Add a big crowd, apres music and revelry in Snowmass Village for the perfect Friday afternoon antics. Open to all levels of tricksters, and kicking off Friday, February 12. Artist Susan Obermeyer Strauss will be exhibiting her work at “Putting-It-All-Together: Collage, Montage, and Assemblage” at Climate/Gallery (37-24 24th Street, Long Island City, NY 11101). The public opening is February 6 from 6-9pm, but if you can’t make it, it runs till February 21. Congrats, Susan!

Big night at the Museum this Thursday the 14th…free public program on fly tying (of the fly fishing varietal) and free soup for you! Exhibiting artist Claire Fontaine’s work was inspired by fly fishing craft on Colorado rivers so in honor of the theme, Taylor Creek Flyfishing Guides Will Sands and Michael Haas will show you how it’s done. And to give you a culinary preview of Friday night’s Soupskol, three-time Soupskol winner Chef Clark Church, of Garnish Cafe, will be on site with a ladel and a taste of this year’s finest.

Wintersköl is this weekend, Aspen’s annual four-day celebration of our unique Nordic approach to life! Highlights include Soupsköl, the canine fashion show (only in Aspen) WinterFest, SnowSculpt (featuring works of art sculpted from some of Anderson Ranch’s artists) and of course, we’ve got fireworks for the grande finale.

It’s a comin’; you can feel it, smell it…snow is in the forecast but in the meantime, bundle up tight and bring it indoors. Bruce Hornsby plays the BellyUp this Saturday, December 5th. Old Spiderfingers himself, gracing the stage with over 2 decades of musical mastery. Yes Men Fix the World and The Damned United screen at the Wheeler Opera House starting Monday for a little culture on the big screen. Next week, Opening Day at Highlands and Buttermilk, more fun – and more snow – to come. Stay tuned….
