On all stylists’ top trends list this season is ‘the boyfriend piece’. The boyfriend jacket, the boyfriend sweater, the boyfriend jean. I don’t have a boyfriend. I havn’t even had a date in three years. I’m not really looking to fulfill that area of my life from Saks or Topshop.

On my recent trip to NYC, I did tons of ‘retail therapy‘….enough to fully make up for my lack of ‘couples therapy’. Display on one shop window was a sign claiming ‘boyfriend friendly’. I did enter the store with the intent of finding out what ‘boyfriend friendly’ meant. My curiosity was kicked to the curb. Not one bit of friendly, nor one item that looked like the highly pushed ‘boyfriend piece’.

Regardless, I’d just like to say: back in the day, we ripped in boyfriend jackets, and pants, and long underwear. It smelled bad, didn’t fit, and was available in those great boyfriend colors: mustard, ketchup, and forest green. We rode anyway because it was fun, and that’s fashion.

I’ve definitely outgrown the years of wearing actual mens outerwear, yet my style is just not bunny enough to wear our womens’ line. Lucky for me and every girl who is in heart with the idea of a boyfriend jacket for ripping this winter, Obermeyer offers up the Kalle jacket: BF cut (no princess seams here!), cargo pockets, and a huge hood. I luv it in the yellow, but any neutral will rock over plaid or print pants. Bonus point: it can be belted for a street look if you choose to keep it on through the night out.

It was a depressing day at the office in the heart of the mountains: I tore my LBD. So, I shared my sorrow on my face book status and my fb friends commented: ‘feel for you girl, I tore my ACL, twice..out for the season’ and ‘ooh ouch, where’s the LBD muscle?’. I had assumed anyone who knew me would also know the fashion abbreviations. LBD is the little black dress that any fashionista can wear anytime, anywhere, even three days and nights in a row, just accessorized for each situation. It is the muscle of the wardrobe. OMG: idea. LBJ little black jacket. Just like any good rider, a LBJ can ride any condition, any mountain, any time. It keeps you warm and dry on powder days, breathes on a sunny spring day, and fits like a glove. Mine is our Aston Shell. I’ll X-ccessorize it for multiple mountains throughout the season. Stay tuned to see me make it work.

While celebrating NYC’s Fashions Night Out at Barneys, I picked up the knitting needles again, and now Monday nights are for football and knitting. What to knit is really the question. I’m reminded of my passion for snowboarding in the beginning when I would do anything for a season pass, including sitting 120 hours every fall in a grocery store selling Vail season passes. To pass the time, I knitted beanies for myself and all my friends. Finally, winter arrived, the snow packed, and we’d earned our passes and had a hat for every day of riding! Ten minutes on the hill in those hats, my poor, bald boyfriend and I quickly discovered that hand knit hats sucked…the snow stuck, the yarn froze, and the wind whipped right through the hand stiches to the scalp. Just like the time we tried to build a quarter pipe in the yard, I’ve learned some things are just not meant to be done at home. Buy a hat.
