Obermeyer manufactures product all over the world. We have been involved with many of these factories for over 30 years. For some of these factories, Obermeyer was their first client. Klaus has a mantra, “in business, one hand washes the other, it’s a partnership.” We like to maintain this attitude with our retailers as well as our factories. It’s the way we do business.

Personal Touch, Hoptex receiving our factory-of-the-year award

There are only a few factories that have the facilities and the know-how to make our technical garments. So we like to maintain an extremely close relationship with our manufacturing partners. Several times a year our production staff will travel overseas to visit our factories. As you can imagine, it’s a lot easier to show someone in-person what you want then write it over an email. With jeans or a t-shirt it’s pretty simple, but take a look at the interior package of one of our jackets, it’s a thing of beauty but it’s also very sophisticated. Seam sealing, laser cut welding, removable powder skirts, these are items that require hands on interaction in order to execute successfully. Within our manufacturing facilities there are literally thousands of employees who are specifically trained to deal with Obermeyer garments. Robert Yturri, Obermeyer’s Senior Vice President of Product noted that “Obermeyer products are often times the most technical in the factory. As a result, it’s necessary to train, retrain and update factory employees at least once a year.”

11/12 line being finished up

One of our product specialists Kalle Edwards said it best, “we are pretty meticulous about what we accept when it comes to product. So we need to make sure that everyone is on the same page.”

Yukon in Deep Blue

The Yukon is our freeride fit pant/ charger pant for the season. It’s got a great durable work-wear look. We used black oxidized rivets to anchor the pockets in place and prevent rips. In addition, we installed large tightly webbed nylon belt loops with rivet fastening to add to that, “dependable” look. The Yukon is made of robust, long-life canvas type fabrics that come in a variety of earth tones. This is definitely our blue collar pant in the group. We think the “deep blue” (pictured here) looks great with a white, grey or black jacket.

Josie in White

For this piece, the design team got their inspiration from the famous Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. Kim, one of Obermeyer’s lead designers described the Josie as “a very fresh and confident look, it really is a masterpiece within the collect!” We see so many outdoor companies making ski jackets that are so monotone and plain. We wanted to say something different with this piece, that’s for sure, but we didn’t want to sacrifice the technical ski features that Obermeyer customers demand. So it has powder skirts and cuffs as well as a removable hood.

Serenity in Paint Brush

You remember when you were young, and you were running out the door when your mom would shout, “don’t forget to wear a coat!” and you would turn around with this annoyed look and begrudgingly put on your jacket? We at Obermeyer never want you or your children to have that problem. So we made every colorway in the Serenity a fun bright combo of pastels and bright jewel tones that kids will love to wear. I guess, we wanted the little girl who wears the Serenity to associate the coat with happiness. Serenity, like all of our children’s clothes comes standard with our patented Igrow system, which is great if you need hand-me-downs. It’s also reassuring for parents to know that we build our kids garments out of sustainable fabrics made from recycled pop bottles, and of course, we still have that famous lifetime warranty.

Clone in Phosphorous

Supporting youth skiing and riding is one of our most coveted missions here at Obermeyer. So we thought, why not make a junior boys jacket that has all the bells and whistles of something in our men’s line? The clone is the result of this kind of thinking. Waterproof zippers, powder skirt, critically seam sealed, removable hood: these are all features you would expect to find in our men’s boundary collection. This color is a company favorite.

I wanted to highlight a few pretty incredible things about one of the new fabrics we are using. It’s called Cocona fabric and it’s made, you guessed it, from Coconuts. Ok, so if you want the real techy explanation you can always go to coconainc.com, but here is the dumbed down version. Cocona particles, as opposed to particles from regular yarn, have an enormous surface area. So the moister wicking potential is huge. When liquid is spread over a greater surface area it evaporates more quickly. In addition, the active particles in Cocona fabric are more efficient in capturing energy released from the wearer’s body. The particles use this energy to convert liquid to vapor, accelerating the drying process. If you are not impressed yet by all this, you should be when I tell you that the fabric has a 35,000G breathability rating, making it one of the most (if not the most) breathable fabric in the industry. Cocona is being used in some of our higher end products like the Coco Jacket and the Kenai Shell. I used one of our Cocona jackets to hike the bowl this winter. The breathability was unlike anything I have ever worn before. Check it out when it hits stores in the fall. Here is a brief video that will probably explain it better than I did.

Over Memorial Day weekend a pretty rare thing happened. Aspen Mountain reopened allowing riders to get some super late season turns in. In addition, another perhaps more impressive thing happened over the long weekend. Klaus Obermeyer, just a couple months out from breaking his leg, showed up at the top of Aspen Mountain to chat with fellow skiers and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Seeing Klaus every day, I know what a positive and upbeat person he is. But after witnessing his phenomenally fast recovery, at the age of 91 no less, I became extremely interested in how his attitude affected his recovery and how he looks at life in general. Here is a brief synopsis of what I found out:

Klaus-

Every problem we encounter in life also comes along with an attached opportunity. Often times people will let a problem bog them down but if we just believe that there is an opportunity as well then it allows you to think in a different way about your situation.

Let’s say that someone tells you that you have to find a needle in a haystack. So, you go off searching for that needle. But now let’s say that you didn’t even believe that the needle is in the haystack in the first place. You would probably get discouraged and quit after a couple hours!

Believing that the needle is actually in the haystack is the first step toward being more positive. You have to actually believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. You have to believe that there is opportunity in the problem. I think after a while of doing this you just get good at seeing opportunities in problems. Its wonderful!

OBERMEYER EXPANDS INTERNAL SALES AND CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAMS
WITH KEY APPOINTMENTS

(Aspen, CO) DATE TK, 2010 – Aspen-based Sport Obermeyer (Obermeyer) is pleased to announce the appointment of three new internal team members to further enhance its sales and customer support. The lineup of newly added positions includes Taylor Randall appointed strategic account manager, and Account Executives Brad Miller and Will Schaeffler.

The new positions were structured to further reinforce the company’s long term commitment to service and accommodate its bandwidth during a period of growth. All new positions will report to Obermeyer’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Nathan Dopp.

“Great product with great service is our top priority,” said founder Klaus Obermeyer. “A company is as good as its people and we’re excited to welcome new talent to our Obermeyer team.”

Randall has built his career with a number of globally recognized Colorado companies including Pearl Izumi and Spyder Active Sports before joining Obermeyer. In his new role, he will partner with Obermeyer’s key accounts to provide excellent service and identify opportunities for sustainable growth.

Miller comes to Obermeyer from a sales and retail background, working with notable global brands including DC SHOECO and Red Bull. He will assist regional brand managers in key territories with field training, retail marketing event planning and customer support.
